The Danish people burn more candles per head than anywhere in Europe. “Each Dane burns around six kilos of candle wax each year,” according to Meik Wiking, author of The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well (Penguin Life). Whats more, those feel good Danes often hit the top spot in the United Nation’s World Happiness Report.
So…..could burning candles have anything to do with their happiness…?
Candles are certainly central to creating ‘hygge’ – the cosiness, intimacy and warmth the Danish are famous for. And, I, for one, enjoy snuggling down with a warm glowing light for company each evening. And, if you want more evidence; numerous studies show fragrance, like scented candles with uplifting, refreshing, calming or soothing smells can increase your happiness levels too.
So next time you cosy up with a candle. Like Fresh Linen pictured above. Just think about the ten trees that are planted because you bought it. And, while you imagine happy creatures enjoying their new forest home. Smile.... and let me know how you feel.
